Engineering has been an aspect of life since the beginnings of human existence. Traditionally Civil Engineering has played an important role in improving the civic life of society by harmonizing the natural resources available on earth. Some of the major areas in the field of Civil Engineering are design and construction of various structures like roads, bridges, buildings, tunnels and dams. Also, Civil Engineers have found an important role in some newer areas like design and construction of waste containment systems, disposal of high level nuclear wastes, and protection of groundwater resources.

In recent years Civil Engineers are facing newer challenges in infrastructure development that is resulting into development of newer type of foundation solutions, treatment of natural soils, development of newer materials and use of nanotechnology.

Further, the role of specialized geotechnical engineers is vital and relevant for any structure to stand and be stable on a suitably designed foundation system.Transportation engineering deals with the planning, design and construction of roads, railways, airport, docks and harbors, as well as controlling and regulating the traffic flow.

Broadly a civil Engineer is expected to do planning, research, design and construction of buildings and roads, traffic and transportation, irrigation and power, water supply and sewage disposal, dam and reservoirs, ports and harbors, airways and navigation, treatment of industrial wastes and abatement of air pollution, noise pollution and disaster mitigation.

Thus Civil Engineering is the segment of the engineering profession that provides the basic engineering need of the developing nation.

The Department of Civil Engineering has been in existence at BIT since 2009. Since its inception, the department is imparting quality education to the students by well-qualified faculty from different universities specialized in Structures, Water Resources & Hydraulics, Soil Mechanics, Transportation, Construction Technology, Remote Sensing and GIS disciplines of Civil Engineering. Along with teaching to enrich the knowledge of students the department has established the full-fledged and well-equipped state of art laboratories related to Surveying, Basic Materials Testing, Concrete Testing, Soil Mechanics, Highway Engineering, Engineering Geology, Computer Aided Design, & Hydraulic Machines and Environmental Engineering. The course curriculum designed by Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum includes the study of all the basic engineering sciences as well as civil engineering courses using the latest equipment and design software. Further, the staff and students of the department are actively involved in organizing national conferences/symposiums and special lectures and discussion by eminent persons from the field and industry.

BMT LAB- III Semester civil engineering

The Basic Material Testing (BMT) Lab focuses on the study of the behaviour of materials used in the construction practices. The experiments involved give a detailed understanding of properties like strength, Young’s modulus, and stiffness etc of different metals and wood. A part of the tests also comprises of the testing of the ingredients of concrete like the course and fine aggregates. The lab gives a practical understanding of some important concepts of strength of materials which boosts the level of confidence in the subjects and its application too. The lab is fully equipped with all the relevant equipment like Density Basket, Electronic Universal Testing Machine (60T Capacity), Hardness testing Machine (Brinnel and Rockwell), Impact Testing Machine (Izod and Charpy), Shear Test Apparatus, Tile Flexure Testing Machine, Torsion Testing Machine etc.

CONCRETE AND HIGHWAY MATERIAL LABORATORY

Concrete is a composite construction material used for the construction of various types of structures. Properties of concrete to understand its suitability for a particular job is studied in this laboratory. In this context, the concrete laboratory is fully equipped with all the test setups for cement, fine aggregate, coarse aggregate.

This laboratory is equipped with sophisticated instruments like Aggregate impact tester, Le Chatiliers flask, Vicat Apparatus, Compression testing machine, Flakiness and Elongation apparatus, Concrete Mixer, Moulds (15*15*15 cm), Compaction factor apparatus, Vee Bee consistometer, Flash & Fire point apparatus etc.

ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING LABORATORY 

The Environmental Engineering Laboratory allows students to try out and implement analytical methods important for their future careers.

In the seventh semester Laboratory, students are given a practical introduction to Environmental Engineering measuring methods. The laboratory provides good insight into different experimental methods relevant to Environmental Engineering. Students deal with problems relating to measuring technology and measurement inaccuracy, characterize systems to compare and discuss measurement results using simple methods and models.

HYDRAULICS AND HYRAULIC MACHINERY LABORATORY

This lab gives practical understanding of basics of fluid mechanics, calibration of flow measuring devices, pump and turbines. Our BIT Hydraulics and Hydraulic machinery laboratory is good quality equipment that boost the level of confidence in the subject and its application too.

SURVEYING PRACTICE LABORATORY

The surveying practice is scheduled in the third and fourth semester for the Civil engineering curriculum. The practice focuses on study of various exercises related to surveying methods which are to be employed in civil engineering field. The exercises involved give a detailed understanding of the methods like ranging of points, setting out perpendiculars using different techniques, leveling methods to find elevations of the ground, contours, plane table method for finding area and so on. The practice gives a practical understanding of some important concepts of surveying which boosts the level of confidence in the subjects and its application too

This lab focuses on the practical knowledge about soil.

COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN LABORATORY

COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN LABORATORY is a course designed to allow civil engineering students access to the basic principles of COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN and DRAWING. This lab is facilitated with 24 numbers of computers with AUTO CAD 2007 and STAAD Pro. software.

Every Engineer communicates with a common language called “Engineering Drawings”. The technique of producing engineering drawings is DRAFTING. Students will learn how to manage documents and use the tools within AutoCAD. Student use this AutoCAD LAB for the acquisition of knowledge within program that are necessary for the design.
