Information Science and Engineering

Welcome to the department of Information Science and Engineering. Information Science is an interdisciplinary science primarily concerned with the collection, classification, manipulation, storage, retrieval and dissemination of information. Students are taught to study the application and usage of knowledge in organizations, along with the interaction between people, organizations and any existing information systems, with the aim of creating, replacing or improving information systems. Information science incorporates not only aspects of computer science, but often diverse fields such as cognitive science, commerce, communications, law, library science, management, mathematics, public policy, and the social sciences. BIT offers an undergraduate course leading to a bachelor’s degree in Information Science taught by an experienced faculty equipped with the entire infrastructure and facilities needed for a detailed and comprehensive understanding.

BIT aims to groom students in Information Science through innovative course content, research and industry interaction in areas of software engineering, human-computer interaction, intelligent systems and electronic commerce. Our undergraduate program is designed to give students the ability to identify problems and solve them by creatively using their knowledge gained at BIT.

BIT Information Science & Engineering department has full-fledged laboratories equipped with high-end computers. The Department encourages Innovative projects and guides the students in developing them

Information science is no longer a technology, but it has become a part of life. The world has come ‘closer’ these days. Things which we thought are not possible have become possible. Many of human imaginations have turned to reality. Information technology has contributed in no small measure to this change of events.

I am extremely glad to lead the department of Information Science and Engineering at Bearys Institute of Technology.

We here believe that our approach to teaching-learning, coupled with practical experience gained during Industrial Training in reputed organizations, equips our students to handle the challenges posed by the software industry. In our department we will

  • Instruct students in the state−of−the−art scientific and engineering methods pertinent to Information science and software engineering in order to lead students to a point of understanding where they remain inquisitive, serious, ethical, and creative problem solvers.
  • Be recognized as one of the top educational Information science departments in the region, attracting the best of students, faculty, and staff.
  • Prepare students to be leaders and decision makers, articulate and principled, innovative and confident, and able to think critically with sound reasoning ability.
  • Be engaged in the social and economic development at local, regional, and state level for the benefit of both the public and private sectors.

The Department is committed to the values of:

  • Mutual respect
  • Cooperation & communication
  • Creativity & innovation
  • Community service & leadership
  • Academic & intellectual freedom
  • Pursuit of excellence
  • Public accountability
  • Diversity

Learning is a continuous process and does not end with the acquisition of a degree, especially because steady and rapid advances in computing technologies shorten the life of tools and techniques prevalent today. Therefore we do not aim to make our students walking manuals of any language or package. Instead, they are given a strong foundation in Information science and problem-solving techniques along with human values and are made adaptable to changes so that the students become responsible citizens of India.
