Mechanical Engineering popularly known as “Royal Mech” is one of the oldest and evergreen branch of engineering, which has widely spread its roots into multiple areas of research by giving birth to many newer engineering disciplines like Automotive Engineering, Mechatronics, Nanotechnology, Material Science and Metallurgy, Marine Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, Production Engineering, Robotics and many more. It can be well stated that mechanical engineering is the broadest and most diverse of engineering disciplines.

Mechanical engineers play a central role in industries like automotive (from the car chassis to its every subsystem—engine, transmission, sensors); aerospace (airplanes, aircraft engines, control systems for airplanes and spacecraft); biotechnology (implants, prosthetic devices, fluidic systems for pharmaceutical industries); computers and electronics (disk drives, printers, cooling systems, semiconductor tools); microelectromechanical systems, or MEMS (sensors, actuators, micropower generation); energy conversion (gas turbines, wind turbines, solar energy, fuel cells); environmental control (HVAC, air-conditioning, refrigeration, compressors); automation (robots, data and image acquisition, recognition, control); manufacturing (machining, machine tools, prototyping, micro fabrication).

It is in the light of such challenges that the Mechanical Engineering Department at BIT projects itself as a beacon of knowledge leading students to newer horizons and capabilities.

Mechanical engineering is a discipline of engineering, mounted on the top of a long and distinguished history of innovations and technological breakthroughs that have tremendously benefitted the progress of man and society. In today’s fast-changing world, the ever-growing challenges of limited resources, rapid climate changes and preservation of environment demand a new generation of mechanical engineers cultivated in the necessary skills and innovative spirit to meet them. We at BIT’s Mechanical engineering department feel proud to say that many of faculty members are actively involved in research work in different fields of mechanical engineering – the thrust areas being supersonic Aerodynamics, Composite materials, Condition monitoring, Biodiesel and Non Conventional Energy sources. We are committed to achieving excellence in training not only competent manpower for the profession, but in nurturing engineer-leaders with the ingenuity and drive to provide innovative and bold solutions to these global challenges.  BIT Mechanical Engineering department has full-fledged Laboratories equipped with high-end Machines.  Most of the undergraduate projects are carried out in the department itself with the vastly available facilities.

Students have been constantly encouraged and promoted for doing innovative projects and develop the research oriented proactive thinking from start of the course itself, resulting in the active participation and presentation of research articles/innovative projects in reputed journals/Conferences. 1. Heat and Mass Transfer Lab:Scheduled for sixth semester mechanical engineering students, HMT lab provides the students a practical approach to understand the modes of Heat transfer i.e., Conduction, Convection, and Radiation. The experiments are designed in such a way that after successful completion of the lab a student should be able to clearly understand the principles of heat transfer and the processes involved for efficiency calculations. Some of the important equipments are namely: Forced convection apparatus, Stefan Boltzmann law apparatus, Emissivity measurement and heat exchangers.

2. CIM and Automation Lab:To meet the requirement in transforming the manual processes into automation, university has well set the CIM and Automation lab in 7th semester. This lab imparts the students with the knowledge of programming using software like SeeNC Turn, seeNC mill, CAPSturn, CAPSmill. This software provides features to Checks a manually written program for syntax errors, Lists the errors and locations, Tool path simulation, Cycle time calculation and simulates the tool path. A licensed CADEM V10.0 is the software used for this purpose.

 3. Metallographic and Material Testing Lab:Testing of materials for their various properties is an important job of an mechanical engineering. In this regard the students are taught to test the properties like bending stress, torsional stress, and strength of the material. All this experiments are conducted using a machine called as Universal Testing Machine, which is connected with computer for obtaining the data online. This lab involves two testing procedures, which are used to verify these characteristics. The first test is destructive technique which is used to determine/verify material properties. The second test is non-destructive technique which is used to test structure of the component without destruction.

4. Foundry and Forging Lab:The foundry and forging lab is facilitated to learn about the Heat Treatment, Forging, and also to learn about the testing of sands and sand properties, to know about the molding and casting Techniques of ferrous and non-ferrous metals and alloys, Heat treating facilities which includes a Gas Furnace.  
5. Design Lab:Students will be able to formulate and analyze stresses and strains in machine elements subjected to various loads. Different types of Governors, Vibration analysis, whirling of shafts, and design of bearing are the various experiments conducted in the laboratory.

6. Measurement and Metrology Laboratory:The Measurement and Metrology laboratory at BIT provides the undergraduate students with an active learning environment for the measurement technologies used in mechanical engineering field.  Students use the laboratory to collect and analyze measurement data, evaluate measurement methodologies, and learn the capabilities and limitations of measurement technologies. The capabilities of this Laboratory include a wide variety of coordinate metrology, surface finish and various traditional dimensional metrology instrumentations.
7. CAED/ CAMD/ANSYS:Computer aided engineering drawing labs provide a productive knowledge of 2D and 3D drawing software for students enrolled at the BIT college who require computer access for academic activities. This lab well equipped with 100 latest computers. These facilities provide a productive working environment for students to learn the latest mechanical software’s. A person involved in acquiring computer skills to design of machine parts must have basic knowledge of design and drawing. This lab provides such opportunity to learn about drawing and assembly of 2D and 3D machine parts by using the SOLID WORKS, SOLID EDGE V20, ANSYS11

8. Fluid Mechanics and Machines Lab:Essential knowledge in the field of fluid flow is need of the hour for the engineers involved in studies of optimizing the structure and efficiency of moving bodies. This lab gives basics of fluid mechanics, calibration of flow measuring devices, pump and turbines. Fluid Mechanics lab is highly equipped with all types of equipments that provide the students to improve their skill in the field of fluid mechanics. The lab consists of turbines like Francis and Pelton of scaled down working models. 
9. Energy Conversion Lab:The world of automobile makes many of them crazy. So it is very esstential every budding mechanical engineer should know the basics of the engines, staring from its various parts to optimizing of the fuel efficiency. This lab is equipped with facility to predict viscosity, flash and fire point of different oils, lab involves experiments to calculate calorific value of both solid and liquid fuels. Here the students are given the hand on experience to know how an engine works and even to analyze different parameters of various engines. The lab has various engines to calculate performance of 4-stroke, 2-stroke variable compression ratio engine and multi-cylinder engine.

10. Work shop Lab:It is the place where the first year students come across basic mechanical tools like hammer, anvil, chisels, different types of files, scribers, punches and many more precision measuring tools. The career starting buds are taught to handle the tools individuals and make use of them to carve out the required models from the given raw material by the process of fitting, welding and brazing. The lab is well equipped with advanced tools required for carrying out the required operations like fitting of different models, carpentry, welding, and sheet metal. 
11. Machine Shop Lab:The machine shop lab imparts the knowledge of basic machining processes like turning, facing, taper turning and many more. The lab is equipped with geared lathes, Milling Machine, Shaper Machine with spacious work environment and well experienced foreman to give hands on practice.

  • Under the aegis of Mechanical Engineering Department Association (MECHATICS), the department has conducted an Intra College Technical Fest named “Mechcelarates V14.0” in the month of April 2014.
  • A Technical talk was conducted by the department in the month of April 2014 on the title, “What Industry expects from a budding Engineers” by Chetan R Principal, Hebich Technical Training Institute, Balmatta, Mangalore.
  • A Technical talk was conducted by the department in the month of May 2014 on the title, “Piping Technology- A boon in Middle East Countries” by Mr. Abdul Rashid, Managing Director of Petrocon Piping Institute.
