ORIENTATION PROGRAM FOR FIRST YEAR STUDENTS – 2018

REPORT

Three day orientation program for the first year students was conducted at BIT International Seminar Hall from 1st Aug 2018 to 3 Aug 2018.

Day 1 – Wed, 1st Aug 2018

Session I : “Know your BIT & BEADS

The orientation program started at 9.00 am with the registration of the students. The inaugural ceremony began with the invocation by the students. Dr. Musthafa Basthikodi HoD, CS&E Dept welcomed the gathering. The program was officially inaugurated by the Chairman Mr. Syed Muhammed Beary in the presence of Dr. Antony A J, Principal, BIT, Ar. Ashok Mendonca,Principal, BEADS, Dr. Aziz Musthafa, Principal, Polytechnic and Dr. P.Mahabaleswarappa, Dean, Academics. In his speech the Chairman requested the students to dedicate the upcoming four years of their life and to sacrifice a little of their personal entertainments to stay happy throughout their life.

Ms. Ankitha & Mr. Abdul Khader of CS&E Department presented videos introducing the Bearys Group and Bearys Academy of Learning to the students and parents gathered. Some parents came up with their comments and their expectation on the college. They shared their happiness on their wards getting admission in such an esteemed institution. Dr. Anjum Khan, HoD, Basic Sciences proposed the words of gratitude, reminding the students of the importance of managing their time.

The inaugural ceremony came to an end with the National Anthem.

Session II

In the second session of the day, the chairman interacted with the students and explained the Vision, Mission and objective of the college. He sought the students support to take the college into heights. He also put into words the importance of hard work and having a good attitude in life.

Session III: “Leave My Mark” – Plant a Tree and Leave Your Legacy Behind…..

“Leave My Mark” – Plant a Tree and Leave Your Legacy Behind…, an awareness program on the importance of keeping our environment clean and green was really an eye-opener for the students. Conducted as a part of Vana Mahotsava it was an earnest attempt to lend a green touch to the institutional environment and sensitize the students about their role in conserving it. The campaign run by students also included Guest of Honour, Mr. Jeeth Milan Roche, Mr. Daniel Tauro and Mr. Ravi Kumar, Dy. Range Forest Officer. “Trees are the kindest things we grow”, this has been rightly said as the needs of all the living beings are fulfilled by them. The program began with the invocation of the Almighty. The presidential remarks were made by the Chairman of Bearys Group, Mr. Syed Mohamed Beary. In his remarks, he stressed on forming a personal connection between the students and trees through a process of experience and reflection. The Principal of BEADS, Prof. Ashok LP Mendonca, delivered the inaugural address.  The Principal of BIT, Dr. Antony A.J, spoke about the social responsibility of the students towards safeguarding trees and forests. He also cautioned against the effect of depleting the number of trees. The inaugural program came to an end with the National Anthem. Then about 350 plants are being planted in each staff and students name of BIT & BEADS, in association with the Karnataka Forest Department. The program was anchored by Environment and Ecology Club represented by Ms. Afra. The program was attended by 1st Year Students, Faculty and Heads of Departments.

Day 2 – Thu, 2nd Aug 2018

Session I: Engineering and its Prospectus, by Dr. Mustafa Basthikodi

In the first session of the second day, Dr. Musthafa Basthikodi, HoD of CS&E Department, made a presentation on “Engineering and Its Prospectus”. He explained to the students about the scope of engineering in the present world.

Session II: Methodologies for Learning Engineering & How to excel and VTU Regulations (Academic) by Dr. Mahabaleshwarappa P

Dr. P.Mahabaleswarappa, Dean Academics, enlightened the students on the methodologies and strategies they can use for learning engineering. He gave tips on how to excel in the academics and to reach success. The dean also updated the students on the VTU rules and regulations in the academic perspective.

Session III: VTU Regulations (Examinations) by Prof. Vivekanand B. Huddar

In the third session of the day, Prof. Vivekanand B. Huddar, HoD of Mechanical Department, detailed to the students about the latest rules and regulations of the VTU in the examination perspective.

Session IV: How to get placed, by Ms.Ashwini

The last session of the day by Ms. Ashwini, Placement-in-charge, gave the students an idea on how to get placed easily by the end of their course. She explained on the importance of maintaining a good academic track as well as having a clear cut goal on which industry to join.

Day 3 – Fri, 3rd Aug 2018: Orientation in the respective Department, registration of courses, department tour, HOD office, faculty lounge, class rooms, labs/workshops etc.

The students were taken on a tour of the campus as a part of the orientation program. The students were divided into two groups and were accompanied around the campus visiting the Principal office, account section, bank, ATM, computer facilities, student welfare officer, NSS, EDC, cultural club, sick room, canteen and common rooms for both boys and girls.

 Departments, HoD offices, faculty lounges, classrooms, labs, workshops, library, placement cell, hostels, gym, prayer rooms, dining halls, sports facilities available for indoor and outdoor games, hostel for boys and hostel girls, R&D centre, and all the other facilities in the campus, thereby familiarizing them with infrastructure of the college.Day 4 – Sat, 4th Aug 2018 – “Meet the Myth Buster”

The Lectures and Debates Club of BIT & BEADS on 4th August 2018, organised a campaign to promote scientific temper among the participants with a slogan of ‘MEET THE MYTH BUSTER’, through eminent Biochemist of Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore, Prof. Narendra Nayak as the resource person. Prof. Narender Nayak has taken his life’s mission to eradicate the impact of superstitious belief among the citizens of the country by providing scientific explanations to the techniques used by spurious Godmen and scamsters for financial and other ideological gains by fooling the gullible masses. Prof. Narender Nayak, is the current President of Federation of Indian Rationalists Associations, the founder President of Dakshina Kannada Rationalists Association and also the founder President of Philanthropy called Aid without Religion, which provides school kits to students of weaker sections of society. His other areas of contribution extend to consumer rights advocacy, extending legal and moral support to organisations and individuals who have been grievously wronged by powerful individuals. As a result of this, he has faced the wrath of some organisations who see him being a threat to their evil plans. He has delivered almost 2000 such presentations in India and abroad including Sri Lanka, Australia, England, Denmark, Norway etc.

The program began with a welcome note from Prof. Ar. Ashok LP Mendonca, Principal, BEADS followed by a lecture supported by audio visual documentaries, demonstrations of techniques which included tricks and chemical reactions and other sleight of hands techniques which are routinely used by these spurious Godmen to dupe the public and gain fame and wealth. The diverse set of demos enthralled the entire audience well over three hours. This was followed by intense question and answer sessions on diverse issues including Vastu. The program anchored by Mr. Amal Faizal and Mr. Datharaj finally concluded by presenting the memento to Prof Narender Nayak  by Dr. Antony A J, Principal BIT, and Dean Academics, Dr.P. Mahabaleshwarappa. Dr Aziz Mustafa, Principal, BIT Polytechnic, thereby proposed the vote of thanks. The program concluded with the National Anthem.

Day 5 – Mon, 5th Aug 2018 & Tue, 6th Aug 2018: Exposure to soft skills using computers M S office, Power point & Excel and tutorial class on the same topic.

Organized & conducted by CS&E faculty members

The department of CS&E conducted a two day program giving the students an exposure to the basics of computer skills. The program stressed on the need of computers for engineers and gave a deep insight into the computer hardware. A demo of hardware and assembly was also staged for the students and they were taught how to build their own PC. The students were also familiarised with different kinds of software and were also introduced to exposure to soft skills using computers M S office, Power point & Excel and tutorial classes on soft skills learning using computers M S office, Power point & Excel, with small group of students. At the end of the program based on the skills acquired in a couple of days and exhibited and their smartness, involvement of the students in learning & use of commands and showing keen interest in applications, we have identified the following students for first place, second place and third place, also to appreciate and also to encourage the students we have awarded certificates.

Remaining program was organized as per the schedule.

The Librarian Mr. Anil Kumar and his team led the session familiarizing the students with the college library. The students got an exposure to the different library activities. They were introduced to the different sections in the library including the Reference, Journal, Digital library, etc and explained how they can utilize it to the maximum. The librarian requested the students to visit the library frequently and spent their free times there.

Prof. Vivek Huddar, the Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, communicated with the students assuring them of support and security in the campus. He explained in detail about the anti-ragging cell in the college and its activities. He made the students aware of how seriously anti-social activities like ragging will be dealt by the cell and requested the students to report immediately if any such activities happen.

Prof. Jishad MK then interacted with the students motivating them and requested them to take initiation in all the activities in the college. He urged the students to leave a footprint behind when they leave.

30th Aug 2018, Thu

Setting up own company is a dream most of us cherish. But entrepreneurship is not an easy thing and involves many risks. Mr. Dikshith Rai, Founder of Code Craft Technologies in Mangaluru, enlightened the students on the topic during his session on “Exposure to Entrepreneurship”. He opened the door to the world of entrepreneurship for the students and detailed them about how they can be entrepreneurs and excel in their life.

31st Aug 2018, Fri

Prof. Purushothama CT, Head of Civil Engineering Department, handled the session on Environmental Awareness. He talked on the importance of saving water, electricity, and energy. He focused on creating awareness among the students on sustaining them for the next generation. He also talked about how solid wastes and pollution are being major problems we are facing now and how we can contribute in reducing them.

Prof. Nithin Salian introduced the NSS activities in the college to the students. He detailed about the blood donation camps conducted by the students under the banner of NSS. He motivated the students to join the college NSS unit and be ready for doing service to the society.

1st Sept 2018, Sat

Self-Awareness is the first and foremost life skill to be acquired. SWOT Analysis is one of a prominent method to know the self. Prof. Jishad MK in the session on “SWOT Analysis” educated the students on the topic and made them do an analysis of themselves. The students were astonished to see that they were not aware of their own strengths. The students really enjoyed the session and marked their words of gratitude for letting them know themselves. They promised to work hard on reducing their weakness and threats using the opportunities they get and using their strengths. The session was a stimulus for the students.
