A two days workshop on, “Recent Developments in Mechanical Engineering (RDME-2019)” was organized by MEA Mechanical Students Association in association with Department of Mechanical Engineering on 15th -16th April 2019. Dr. V. B. Huddar, Professor, Mechanical Department welcomed the gathering. Dr. M. Basavaraj, HOD, Mechanical Engg. Dept presented an overview and need of the workshop. He also presented the report on the event conducted by the Department for the current year. Dr. Mahabaleswarappa (Principal- BIT, Mangalore) gave the presidential address. He stressed on students to be industry ready and understand the university curriculum completely. Dr. Aziz Mustafa (Director- BIT, Polytechnic) addressed the audience with an inspiring speech, in which he motivated all to set goals in achieving Success and said: “There is no TECH without MECH”. Prof. Nithin, Assistant Professor, Mechanical Department, delivered the vote of thanks.
The resource person for day one was Dr. G. C. Mohan Kumar, Professor, Mechanical Department, NITK Suratkal. and Dr. Arun M, Professor, Mechanical Department, NITK Suratkal.
Dr. G. C. Mohan Kumar delivered the talk, in which he emphasized that mechanical engineering challenges are on a daily basis, advances in technology and market competitiveness. He quoted reasons for product failure due to slight engineering misconceptions. He also highlighted the recent trends in the field of Bio-Mechanics. He demonstrated the stresses resulting in the skull due to chewing. How stress nullification in the skull is naturally wired in a human body.
Dr. Arun M briefed the audience about basic governing flow equations and highlighted the applicability of CFD. He highlighted the ongoing trending areas of research in CFD and open source CFD software and tutoring materials available for self-learning.
The resource person for day two was Dr. Anish, Professor, Mechanical Department, NITK Suratkal Dr. Raghunandan K, Professor, Mechanical Department, MIT, Manipal
Dr. Anish has given a talk on turbomachinery by showing some historical techniques and machines built to generate energy by harnessing the fluid flow energy. He has thrown light on governing equations for turbomachinery and the basics of drawing velocity triangles. He gave the technological developments and concepts being presented to tap the wind energy.
Dr. Raghunandan K. spoke about the fascinating field of robotics and its applications. He pondered on various aspects of robot basics, design as per need and applications. There was an enthusiastic response from the students. The registration was free for the faculty and students. This workshop helped the faculties and students to gain knowledge on research in the area of the above domains. The interaction with the speaker also helped a few students to get different project ideas. The two days workshop was concluded with National Anthem
